Indian Village
The novel The Light in the Forest, once a staple of high school reading, was intended by the author to explore the apparent mystery that numerous white captives of the Indians did not want to return to white society once "rescued." Part of the mystery is explained by comparing the two villages. Although Europeans were far ahead of the Indians in terms of "high technology" like sailing ships and metal tools, the overall comfort level, especially among poor Europeans, would not have been that great. It would not be like being taken from a world of automobiles and central heating and forced to live in a longhouse. Whichever society you belonged to, the diet was monotonous, the work was brutal, you had to keep the fire going or go cold, you walked everywhere you went and you bathed rarely, and then in cold water. Small mystery that captives who had grown used to their new life had little motivation to change.
